The plants are known for the bumpy green fruits in the form of balls, about 6 inches around, which stay on the tree even after the leaves fall. This plant also has many uses. The sharp thorny trees used to be planted as cattle-deterring hedges before the introduction of barbed and or electrified wire and afterward became an important source of fence posts. The heavy, close-grained yellow-orange wood is very dense and is prized for tool handles, tree nails, fence posts, electrical insulators, and other applications requiring a strong stable wood that withstands rot. Straight-grained osage timber  makes very good bows. When dried, the wood has the highest BTU content of any wood, and burns long and hot.
